Second to buying a house, a car purchase is the most expensive purchase you may make in your lifetime. The average price across the UK for the purchase of a new car is approximately £18,000. This figure gives you an idea as to what the average is and to what you should be paying.

Do research ahead of time and know the make, model and if the extras you are looking for that way when you arrive at the dealership you will not feel so pressured by all the sales tactics the salespeople use with you.

Check different publications that are related to cars. Consumer guides will help to see the positive and negatives on the vast majority of cars that are in the marketplace today. Shop around at different dealerships. The base prices may not be that different but all the add ons can add to the final price being very expensive.

Be able to negotiate the price. Dealers understand that you are going to try and get a lower price and then have worked in a bit of a cushion in the pricing know that many people will negotiate. You may be surprised but you probably can get between 10 and 20% discounted off the sticker price.

Another reason to negotiate the price is so your monthly payments are lower and it will be easier for you to pay on time each month. If you do not like what is on the lot, ask the dealer if another dealer has what you are looking for or if you could order it from the factory and wait for it to arrive. Remember next to your house it may be your largest purchase and you do not want to regret it after buying it.

Learn the terms that are important so you can understand what the salesman is referring to. Invoice price for instance is the price the manufacturer charges the dealer. This usually is not a true indicator as to what the dealer paid for the vehicle since they receive rebates from the manufacturer. There are a number of other important terms to know like base price, dealer sticker price and Monroe Sticker Price.

As prices vary to the extreme, make sure you compare the prices of new cars beforehand.
